How to Track Your Google Rankings (and Interpret Them)

Your position is not the same for everyone. Here is how to track it reliably and draw the right conclusions.

Knowing where your site stands in Google seems simple: type a query and look. In reality, what you see is not what your customers see. Here is how to track your rankings usefully.

Why a manual search is misleading

  • Personalization: history, language and settings influence results.
  • Location: the same query gives different results in Lyon, Paris or Marseille, especially for local searches.
  • Device: mobile and desktop don't always show the same ranking.
  • Special blocks (snippets, videos, maps, AI answers) shift the real place of your link.
  • Constant updates: results fluctuate from one day to the next.

Browsing in private mode doesn't eliminate these factors: location and context are still taken into account.

1. Google Search Console, the reference source

The Performance report shows, for each query and page, the impressions, clicks, CTR and average position, based on what was actually shown to users. Precautions:

  • Position is an average: a site visible at several places in the results depending on the person gets an intermediate value.
  • Filter by country and device to get more faithful figures.
  • Analyze by group of queries or pages rather than keyword by keyword.

2. Rank tracking tools

They query Google automatically at regular intervals, from a location and device type you choose, and keep the history. They are useful for:

  • tracking a list of strategic keywords over time;
  • comparing your visibility with that of competitors;
  • observing special blocks on the results page.

Choose the location, language and device that match your customers, and keep them identical from one reading to the next.

3. Local tracking

For a local business, position depends heavily on where the user is. Some tools offer a grid of positions around your location. Complement with the Google Business Profile's statistics.

How to interpret the numbers

  • Don't react to daily fluctuations: look at trends over several weeks.
  • Track groups of keywords (by topic, by page type) rather than a single term.
  • Connect position and results: a better position only has value if it brings clicks and conversions.
  • Check the cause of a drop: technical, seasonality, competition, Google update.

Position is only a means. Keep qualified traffic and the conversions SEO generates for your business as your compass.
