How to Do an SEO Audit, Step by Step

An SEO audit assesses your site's health and identifies the most profitable actions. Here is the method, step by step.

An SEO audit analyzes a site to understand why it ranks the way it does and to decide what to improve first. Here is a simple eight-step method.

1. Define the goals

Which pages and keywords matter for your business? Are you aiming for more traffic, leads or sales? An audit without goals produces an endless list of details with no priority.

2. Check crawling and indexing

  • Are the important pages indexed? Use Search Console (indexing report, URL inspection).
  • Do the robots.txt file and noindex tags block useful pages by mistake?
  • Is the XML sitemap up to date and does it contain only valid URLs?

3. Crawl the site

An SEO crawler travels through the site like a bot. It spots 404 errors, redirect chains, missing or duplicated tags and orphan pages.

4. Check the technical side

  • Proper HTTPS and a single version of the site (with or without www).
  • Mobile display and Core Web Vitals (PageSpeed Insights).
  • Consistent canonical tags, clean 301 redirects.

5. Analyze page optimization

  • A unique, relevant title and meta description per page.
  • A clear heading structure (one H1, logical H2s).
  • Compressed images with alt text.
  • Consistent internal linking.

6. Evaluate the content

  • Does the content match search intent?
  • Are there very weak, duplicated or competing pages (cannibalization)?
  • Which content should be updated, merged or removed?

7. Review authority and competition

Look at the backlink profile: quality, diversity, questionable links. Compare yourself with sites that rank better than you for your queries to understand what they do differently.

8. Prioritize and plan

Rank each issue by its potential impact and the effort required. Deal first with what blocks indexing and what affects your strategic pages. Write an action plan with owners and deadlines, then measure the effects in Search Console.

Run a light audit every quarter and a full audit once a year or after a redesign.
