Internal or External Links: Which Matter More for SEO?

They don't play the same role: internal links organize your site, external ones reflect your reputation.

· 2 min read

Internal and external links are often compared as if you had to choose. In reality, they play different roles and complement each other.

The three types of links

  • Internal links: from one page of your site to another page on the same site.
  • Backlinks (inbound links): from another site to yours.
  • Outbound links: from your site to other sites.

The role of internal links

  • They let bots discover and crawl your pages.
  • They provide context through anchor text.
  • They distribute importance among your pages: a page heavily linked internally appears more central.
  • They guide visitors to useful content.

Their great advantage: they are entirely under your control. This is often the fastest, least costly lever.

The role of backlinks

  • They serve as an outside recommendation: other sites consider your content worth citing.
  • They bring direct visits from the pages that cite you.
  • They contribute to your reputation with engines, especially when they come from reliable, relevant sites.

Their difficulty: they can't be controlled, they must be earned, and they take time.

The role of outbound links

  • They let you cite sources and point readers to useful references.
  • Linking to quality sources strengthens a piece's credibility.
  • They don't "leak" your authority: linking to relevant sites is a normal web practice.

Which matter more?

Backlinks from reputable sites are generally a stronger reputation signal, since they are outside your control. But they don't replace good internal structure: without coherent linking, your best pages and the links they receive benefit the rest of the site poorly. Conversely, excellent linking does no miracles for a site nobody cites.

Best practices

  • Take care of internal linking first: it's free and immediate.
  • Link your content together with descriptive anchors, toward your important pages.
  • Create citable content to attract backlinks naturally.
  • Cite your sources with outbound links to reliable references.
  • Flag paid or sponsored links with rel="sponsored", and links from user content with rel="ugc".
  • Don't add links to dubious sites you don't wish to endorse.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Neglecting internal linking and relying only on backlinks.
  • Buying backlinks to compensate for a poorly structured site.
  • Filling pages with outbound links of no value to the reader.
  • Making outbound links to low-quality sites without flagging them.

Think of links as a whole: a clear internal structure to organize your content, useful outbound links for your readers, and earned backlinks to attest to your reputation.
