Disavowing Toxic Links: When and How to Do It

Disavowing links is rarely necessary. Here is when it is useful, and how to proceed safely.

· 2 min read

A site almost always ends up receiving low-quality links: dubious directories, spam sites, automatically created links. Should you disavow them all? In the vast majority of cases, no.

What does the disavow tool do?

Google's disavow tool lets you ask that certain links or domains not be taken into account when assessing your site. It doesn't remove the link: it simply tells Google to ignore it.

What does Google say?

Google explains that its systems already know how to ignore most spammy links, and that most sites don't need this tool. It describes it as an advanced feature to use with care. Disavowing quality links by mistake can actually harm your visibility.

When to use it

  • You received a manual action for artificial or unnatural links, visible in Search Console.
  • You have a large number of artificial or low-quality links (for example from an old link-buying campaign or a dubious SEO service), and you think they could lead to a manual action.

If a few odd links appear in your profile, do nothing: that is normal.

The method

  • Export your links from Google Search Console (Links report).
  • Analyze them: spot domains unrelated to your topic, site networks, commercial anchors repeated abnormally.
  • Try to get them removed first by contacting webmasters. This is what Google expects in case of a manual action.
  • Prepare a text file (.txt) in the required format:
# Artificial links from an old campaign
domain:example-spam-site.com
domain:another-dubious-site.net
https://example-blog.com/page-with-isolated-link.html
  • One line per entry, domain: for a whole domain, a URL for a specific page, # for comments.
  • Upload the file in Google's disavow tool, on the right property.

Good to know

  • Processing is not immediate: it can take several weeks, because Google has to recrawl the links concerned.
  • Keep a copy of the file and notes on what you did.
  • In case of a manual action, you also need to send a reconsideration request explaining the actions taken.
  • Avoid relying solely on automatic "toxicity" scores from third-party tools: they are indicative and produce many false positives.

The best protection remains not buying links and building a natural, diverse link profile.
