What Is Local SEO? Definition and Main Levers
Local SEO helps businesses appear when customers search for a service near them. Here is how it works.

Local SEO covers the actions that let a business appear in search results tied to a place: "bakery near me", "plumber Nice", "dentist open Sunday". It concerns shops, healthcare professionals, tradespeople, restaurants, but also any business that operates in a precise geographic area.
Where do local results appear?
- The local pack: the block of a few businesses with a map, at the top of results.
- Google Maps: search directly in the app or on the mapping site.
- Regular organic results, adapted to the user's location.
- The business's information panel when its name is searched.
How Google ranks local results
Google states that three main criteria come into play:
- Relevance: does the listing match what the person is looking for?
- Distance: is the business close to the user or to the place mentioned in the search?
- Prominence: is the business known, cited and well regarded, online and offline?
The essential levers
- The Google Business Profile listing: complete, accurate, up to date, with the right categories, photos and reliable hours.
- Customer reviews: earning authentic reviews and replying to them.
- Consistency of information (name, address, phone) across the site, the listing and directories.
- The website: clear service pages, visible contact details, useful content for customers in the area,
LocalBusinessmarkup. - Local links and mentions: local press, associations, partners, chamber of commerce.
- Mobile experience: most local searches happen on phones, with immediate needs (call, get there).
What local SEO is not
- It doesn't require premises open to the public: a business that travels to its customers can define a service area.
- It doesn't mean multiplying fake addresses or fictitious listings, which goes against Google's rules.
- It isn't just adding a city name everywhere in the text.
How to measure results
- Listing insights: calls, direction requests, clicks to the site.
- Google Search Console: queries with place mentions.
- Local rank tracking from several points around the location.
- Quote requests, appointments and sales attributed to local search.
Local SEO is often the most profitable lever for a neighborhood business: people searching for a service near them are often close to taking action.
