Updating Old Content: The Method to Gain Traffic

Improving existing content is often more profitable than creating new content. Here is how to go about it.

Many sites keep publishing new articles while letting the old ones age. Yet improving an existing page is often faster and more profitable than creating a new one: it already has a URL, a history, sometimes links.

1. Choose the pages to refresh

  • Pages whose traffic or rankings are dropping in Search Console.
  • Pages sitting between positions 5 and 20: an improvement can bring them into the top results.
  • Pages with many impressions but a low CTR.
  • Outdated content: obsolete figures, tools, rules or screenshots.
  • Pages that are strategic for your business (services, flagship products).

2. Analyze before changing

Look at the queries the page appears for and at the results page: has the intent changed? Do the better-ranked competitors cover topics, questions or formats that you don't?

3. What to update

  • The facts: figures, dates, names, features, regulations.
  • The structure: a clear answer from the start, readable headings, lists, tables.
  • The depth: add the missing sections and questions, concrete examples, visuals.
  • The title and meta description to improve click-through rate.
  • Internal linking: links to your new content, and links from it.
  • Sources and authors: reliable references, name and role of the person who reviewed it.

4. Points of attention

  • Keep the URL unless there is a serious reason: the page's history is an asset.
  • Don't artificially refresh the date: changing the date without significant changes goes against Google's recommendations. Show an update date only when the content has truly changed.
  • Don't delete without thought a page that still receives traffic or links.

5. Merge or remove when useful

If several weak articles cover the same subject, merge them into one more complete piece and 301-redirect the old URLs. Pages with no value or traffic can be cleanly removed.

6. Measure the result

Note the modification date and compare clicks, impressions and positions before and after, over several weeks. Request reindexing with the URL inspection tool to speed things up.

Schedule a review of your key content at least once a year: it is a simple habit that protects your traffic over the long term.
