SEO Agency or Freelancer: How to Choose and Avoid the Pitfalls

The right SEO provider depends on your size, needs and budget. Here is how to compare and avoid bad surprises.

When you decide to get SEO support, you hesitate between an agency, a freelancer or building an in-house team. No option is better in absolute terms: it all depends on your situation.

Comparing the options

  • The freelancer: a single point of contact, often more flexible and more affordable, who knows your project well. Limit: one person rarely covers all skills (technical, writing, link building) and availability is limited.
  • The agency: a team with complementary skills, processes, tools and the capacity to scale up. Limit: higher cost, and sometimes a contact who changes or standardized methods.
  • The in-house team: detailed knowledge of your business and maximum responsiveness. Limit: long recruitment, fixed cost and a need for continuous training.
  • A mixed model: an internal lead supported by a consultant or agency on specific topics.

Criteria for choosing

  • Your size and the complexity of the site: a small showcase site doesn't need the resources of a large e-commerce store.
  • Your budget and time horizon: SEO needs continuity over several months.
  • Your needs: one-off audit, regular support, content production, migration.
  • Experience in your sector or on comparable projects.

Questions to ask

  • Can you present concrete comparable cases, with references I can contact?
  • How do you diagnose a site and what would be your first priorities for mine?
  • Which actions are included, and which are left to me?
  • How do you earn links and do you follow Google's rules?
  • Which indicators do you track, and how often will I get a report?
  • Who will actually work on my project?
  • Will I have access to my data (Search Console, Analytics) and my content?
  • What are the exit conditions of the contract?

Warning signs

  • A promise of first position or guaranteed results: nobody controls Google's algorithm.
  • "Secret methods" they refuse to explain.
  • Mass link buying or site networks, against Google's rules.
  • No access to your own tool accounts, or accounts created in their name.
  • Reports full of metrics unrelated to your goals (rankings, scores) and without analysis.
  • An identical approach for every client, with no prior audit.
  • Pressure to sign quickly or a long commitment from the start.

Framing the collaboration well

  • Define goals tied to your business: quote requests, sales, qualified traffic, not just rankings.
  • Start with an audit or a trial period rather than a long commitment.
  • Keep ownership of your site, your content and your access.
  • Plan a regular check-in to follow progress and adjust.
  • Check that actions are documented so you can resume the work in-house or with another provider.

The right provider is the one who clearly explains what they do, promises nothing impossible and ties their work to your results. Take the time to compare at least two or three proposals before choosing.
