Does Keyword Density Still Matter in SEO?

Counting keywords no longer makes sense. It is better to write clearly, cover the topic and use natural vocabulary.

Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword appears in a text compared with the total number of words. For a long time, people advised aiming for a specific rate, often 1 to 3%. What about today?

There is no ideal density

Google has never defined a percentage to follow, and its systems now understand the meaning of a text well beyond simple word counting. Engines can recognize synonyms, neighboring expressions and related topics. Aiming for a specific rate means optimizing for a criterion that doesn't exist.

Keyword stuffing goes against the rules

Google's spam policies explicitly target keyword stuffing: repeating words or numbers excessively or unnaturally to manipulate rankings. It also degrades reading, and therefore the experience, which works against your goals.

What really matters

  • Answer the search intent: the content must deliver what the user is looking for.
  • Cover the topic with its subtopics, questions and natural vocabulary (semantic field).
  • Place the main topic in key spots: title tag, H1, introduction, a few subheadings, URL. Naturally, without forcing it.
  • Write for readers: clear sentences, precise terms, examples.

How to write naturally

  • Use variants: a single concept can be expressed in several ways.
  • Use pronouns and rephrasings rather than repeating the same group of words.
  • Read aloud: if a sentence sounds artificial, it probably is.
  • Add examples, figures, definitions that enrich the text.

What about semantic optimization tools?

Some tools offer a "richness" score or a list of terms to include, based on the best-ranked pages. They can help spot forgotten topics, but their scores are indicative and guarantee no result. Don't follow them blindly if it hurts readability.

In practice

Choose a main topic, write to fully answer the question, then simply check that this topic appears in the title, the introduction and the section headings. If the text is clear, complete and pleasant to read, the "density" takes care of itself.
