Google Core Updates: What to Do When Your Traffic Drops
A core update is not a penalty: it is a global adjustment of Google's systems. Here is how to analyze it and respond calmly.

Several times a year, Google rolls out a core update. It regularly causes traffic gains and drops, and a lot of worry.
What is a core update?
It is a broad change to Google's ranking systems, meant to improve the overall relevance of results. It doesn't target any particular site and is not a penalty. Some pages go up and others go down, because the engine reassesses what it considers the best results for each query.
Core update, spam update, manual action: don't confuse them
- Core update: a general relevance adjustment.
- Spam update: targets practices that go against Google's policies.
- Manual action: a penalty applied by a human, visible in Search Console.
What to do when traffic drops
- Wait for the rollout to finish. Google says a core update can take up to about two weeks. Results may fluctuate during that time.
- Check that the update really is the cause: first rule out a technical problem, seasonality, a migration or a tracking error.
- Compare in Search Console a period after the end of the rollout with an equivalent period before it started.
- Identify the affected pages and queries to see whether the drop is general or concentrated on one type of content.
- Compare yourself to the pages that overtook you: what depth, expertise, clarity and freshness do they offer?
How to improve in a lasting way
- Assess your content using the quality questions Google publishes in its documentation: does it provide original information? Is the author identified and credible? Does the reader get a complete answer?
- Strengthen visible expertise, trustworthiness and real experience (see E-E-A-T).
- Merge or remove weak, redundant content.
- Avoid hasty, sweeping changes: measure, then act in stages.
How fast does it bounce back?
There is no guaranteed timeline. Improvements can take several months to be fully taken into account, and a significant recovery is often associated with a later update. The best reflex remains to build a genuinely useful and reliable site, which protects you best over time.
