Customer Reviews and Local SEO: How to Get and Manage Them
Customer reviews strengthen your local prominence and reassure buyers. Here is how to get them within the rules.

Online reviews influence both local visibility and the buying decision. A business with many recent, well-rated reviews inspires more trust than one with none.
The impact on local SEO
Google states that a business's prominence is part of local ranking criteria, and that reviews (their number and rating) contribute to it. Regular replies and recent reviews also signal activity. Reviews are only one element among others: listing relevance and distance count too.
How to get reviews
- Ask at the right time: right after a successful purchase, a completed service, positive feedback.
- Make it easy: use the direct link to the Google listing, a QR code in store, a message in the follow-up email.
- Train your team to suggest a review naturally.
- Ask every customer, not only those you are sure are satisfied.
What Google's rules prohibit
- Fake reviews, whether positive for you or negative for a competitor.
- Paid reviews or reviews encouraged by a reward: offering a discount or gift in exchange for a review is prohibited.
- Review gating: asking only happy customers for reviews.
- Reviews from people with a conflict of interest: employees, relatives, competitors.
These practices can lead to the removal of reviews, or even suspension of the listing.
How to reply to reviews
- Reply to all of them, positive and negative, within a reasonable time.
- Thank sincerely, personalizing the message rather than pasting the same reply.
- Facing a negative review: stay calm, acknowledge the problem, offer a solution and invite them to continue privately. Never blame the customer.
- Avoid stuffing your replies with keywords.
- Report reviews that break the rules (insults, off-topic, fake reviews) rather than replying angrily.
Showing reviews on your site
Present real testimonials on your service pages. Beware of markup: reviews you collect about your own business generally don't qualify for star display in results for "LocalBusiness" or "Organization" types. Only mark up what matches the visible content and complies with Google's rules.
Tracking your reviews
Monitor the number, average rating and regularity of new reviews. Repeated negative feedback on the same point is often the best indicator of an improvement to make in the business itself.
